Stobart was born in Leicester, England in December 1929. He attended the Derby College of Art, and went on to receive a county scholarship to the Royal Academy Schools. It was on a journey to Southern Rhodesia that his work on paintings of sea vessels began. Stobart produced many sketches at each port, and later borrowed plans for the ships in his sketches to aid him in producing final paintings.
He emigrated to Canada in 1957 and began working from sites around the St. Lawrence River, but still returned to England periodically to appeal to his followers there. It was in 1965 he first introduced his works to the United States, and his success has been clear.
Stobart founded Maritime Heritage Prints, Inc. in 1976 to produce prints of his more important oils. In 1986, images of many of his oils were compiled into a book titled "Stobart, The Rediscovery of American Maritime Heritage", published by E.P. Dutton, New York.
Using profits from his business, Stobart established "The Stobart Foundation" in 1989 for students excelling in on-site outdoor oil-painting.
