John Mecray

Firmly established as one of the world's finest marine painters, John Mecray has earned an international reputation for excellence. In 1961, after graduating from Philadelphia College of Art, he freelanced and taught drawing classes at his alma mater. In 1976 he gave up his successful career as an illustrator and moved to Newport, Rhode Island to devote full time to painting. He became well known for his masterful paintings of classic yachts, clearly conveying a sense of their power and grace.

John's experience, perspective, and the love of subject sets his work apart in a field rich in tradition. His interest in yachting history led to the founding of The Museum for Yachting in 1979. He is also a founder and trustee of the international Yacht Restoration School in Newport. In addition he is a member of Mystic Seaport's Yachting Committee, the New York Yacht Club, and the National Maritime Historical Society.
