Joseph McGurl

Joseph McGurl was born in 1958 and is a native of Quincy, MA. He grew up observing and working with his father, muralist James McGurl, from whom he received his most influential instruction. He subsequently graduated from Massachusetts College of Art and studied in England and Italy.

McGurl is an elected member of the elite Guild of Boston Artists where he won the first place gold medal of the annual members show. He has also won awards from the Salmagundi Club in New York and the Copley society of Boston.

McGurl's paintings are often seen in relationship to the great 19th century luminist painters but with a thoroughly modern approach to style and subject. This has attacted the attention of museum curators who have included his work in shows at the Fitchburg Art Museum, The Newport Art Museum and The Cape Museum of Fine Art.

His creative process involves painting small sketches of the scene on location, and then reinterpreting the sketches back at his studio to form the foundation for the large finished canvases. Rather than relying on photography, this method allows him to create his works based on his sketches, memory, and his imagination.

McGurl worked for a period as a yacht captain sailing throughout the East Coast and in the Carribean. During the summer months, he cruises the northeast coast with his wife and two sons aboard their Down East cruiser Atelier which he uses as a floating studio.

McGurl's prints are also available "remarqued". Please inquire for availability and pricing.
